Employment History

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

BROADCAST

BBC Television
Director - The Air Show BBC2 (1 Season)
The Air Show was the BBC's aviation magazine programme. Specifically, I produced and directed the Classic Planes strand, a popular feature of the programme, creating informative and nostalgic films about some of the aircraft that have changed history and the people who flew them. Working on location with presenters and including air to air filming and much historical research.

Producer - Crufts, in Association with Animal Planet
Employed by the BBC Events Department, I was responsible for producing inserts for Animal Planet, a division of The Discovery Channel, which bought into the BBC's coverage of the famous dog show for simultaneous live broadcast in the US. I worked alongside both BBC colleagues and their US counterparts and was also required to liaise between the two.

Channel 4 Television
Director - Right to Reply (3 Seasons)
In 1994, after working as a tape librarian, I gained the much coveted trainee researcher role on Channel 4's only in-house productions, Right to Reply and The Slot. I was promoted to Assistant Producer/Director after my first of three seasons and consistently produced entertaining and insightful inserts for the show as well as often being responsible for the weekly studio discussion, working closely with presenter Roger Bolton.

Producer/Director - The Slot (1 Season)
The Slot was a three minute public access programme known today as Three Minute Wonders which is broadcast immediately after Channel 4 News. My role was to source and research up to four stories a week and then to produce and direct on location. Each programme needed to be filmed and edited within a very tight timeframe, usually for broadcast the same day, and had to be both topical and entertaining.

The Discovery Channel
Writer/Director - Discovery Today (3 Seasons)
Discovery Today was a half-hour, weekly documentary magazine programme which was both studio based and shot on location. My role was to formulate, research and direct interesting and topical stories in the kinds of areas for which the Discovery Channel specialises, such as new technology and science, history, archaeology, natural history and disasters. The programme could be either studio based, as-live with discussions and pre-recorded inserts or shot entirely on location depending on the subject matter. As such I was responsible for all writing and directing including gallery studio direction.

Producer/Director - Sex Sense (3 seasons)
Originally a Canadian production, this half-hour documentary series about human sexuality was extensively re-worked for the UK Discovery Health Channel. Major re-scripting and much re-shooting of footage, particularly with presenter Dr Catherine Hood, was required. As producer, I acted as an independent production company from my own production office and, as well as the editorial, I was also responsible for formulating and organising budgets, schedules, crew and deliverables.

Producer/Director - Gilda's Club
Gilda's Club was a one off hour-long documentary, originally produced in the US, about a cancer charity and its work. Like Sex Sense, it required a major re-working for a UK audience and I worked as an independent producer.

Producer/Director - Judge Wapner's Animal Court (2 Seasons)
This somewhat bizarre programme was shown on Discovery's Animal Planet channel and in order to appeal more to a UK audience I produced and directed around 50 to 60 inserts featuring Sir Terry Wogan who brought his own irreverent take to proceedings. In producing these I was responsible for direction, set design and creating a vision of animal mayhem as a backdrop!

Producer/Director - The Total Eclipse
This position involved three weeks of location shooting, mainly in Cornwall, to provide a multitude of feature inserts for Discovery's day long live coverage of Britain's total eclipse.

Director/Assistant Producer
Aviation Security- The Phantom Menace
Discovery Channel
This flagship Discovery Networks Europe commission was a one-hour documentary, screened worldwide, which investigated the latest developments, technology and challenges faced by the airline industry in the wake of 9/11 and asked whether aviation could remain both safe and viable.

Director/Assistant Producer
Air Traffic Control
Discovery Channel
The first of two productions that I worked on concurrently with Perspective Television, this flagship, one-hour documentary investigated the predicted huge growth in air travel and looked at whether technology could cope with this increase safely in the light of the tragic mid-air collision over Germany earlier in the year.

OTHER TV WORK

Associate/Development Producer
From Sea to Source
ITV
I conceived and formulated this series featuring Nick Clark as he travels by whatever means possible from the Thames estuary to the river's source in Gloucestershire. I also directed the pilot of the programme that led to the commissioning of the series.

Producer/Director
Children's GMTV with Mr Motivator

Repackaging/Re-versioning Producer
Discovery Channel
This position required the extensive editing and re-scripting of programmes across the Discovery Networks and I was given particular responsibility for aviation, military and historical programming.
