About Sam

  • Share profile:
In over 10 years in TV I have directed and self shot over 150 films in HD for prime time BBC One and Two. PD on Countryfile and Coast - two of the top rated shows on each channel. Im a strong editorial director specialising in self shooting in HD on various cameras. As well as obs doc this includes a range of presenter led features and investigations with large crews and Live Productions.

COAST: I have recently been location Director on COAST Directing various films around Britain with specialist presenters - lots of history and science, CGI, aerials and boats. Working with crews, mini cams and self shooting. Directed the first show - the hour on 'tides', as well as films for other themes.

MATT BAKER'S RICKSHAW CHALLENGE: I self shot this doc from Edinburgh to London - backwards! filmed over 8 long slow days - satellite fed back to London daily for the One Show - raising over £1.5 million for Children in Need. Huge logistics, health and safety and talent management needed!! Hour long doc in edit for delivery 2012.

LAMBING LIVE. I Produced, Directed and self shot in HD all of Kate Humbles VTs and all the obs doc films over 7 months with the Marston family in Cumbria.

I have developed, produced, directed and self shot 'ADAMS FARM' for COUNTRYFILE in its new prime time slot with up to 8 million viewers. I have Directed on every element of the show - from journalistic Investigations with John Craven, to the main films with Matt Baker and Julia Bradbury - to entirely self shot films with various presenters like James Wong in HD.

I have also directed and self shot a series of observational documentary films about the National Trust, Glastonbury festival and on a wildlife reserve for weekly broadcast on BBC One.

    Skills

Shooting in HD on various cameras.

Working on large prime time productions with high editorial standards.

Working on Live OBs of various scales - and delivering self shot films on time.

In my work in observational documentary
I also pride myself on getting the best out of people. On Lambing Live I spent 6 months getting to know the Marston family in Cumbria and this came across in the live shows and in my VT films.

My diverse background in documentary and music videos also gives me a creative flair - on a shoot and in the edit. I am driven to get the best out of each project but achieve this with a relaxed approach which I find enables me to get the best of the various teams, crews and editors I have worked with all over the country.

On Countryfile and Coast I have been responsible for rigorous journalism on shoots such as the Bird Flu special from Australia.

I enjoy self shooting and then bringing the very best out of stories in the edit. Finding great characters and stories and then crafting it with a snappy script and creative shooting and editing is my forte.
