Mike's Biography

I'm an experienced producer/director with nearly 50 broadcast credits for a range of distinctive and visual programmes. I specialise in factual documentaries (features, science, arts), drama documentary and factual entertainment.

Most recently, I produced and directed INSIDE INCREDIBLE ATHLETES, a feature length documentary for Channel 4 Specialist Factual and Renegade Pictures. Other previous work includes JUMP LONDON for Channel 4, Kirsty Wark's BBC2 architecture series FROM HERE TO MODERNITY, the format defining first series of WAYNE ROONEY'S STREET STRIKER for Sky One, period drama documentary YESTERDAY WE WERE IN AMERICA, and LITTLE BRITAIN DOWN UNDER for BBC1.

I'm as comfortable with a cast and crew of hundreds as I am with documentary team. Aside from a leading role on dozens of more 'traditional' documentary productions and a handful of TV ads, I've worked extensively with large units and have broad experience with multi-camera location shoots (SD, HD, Canon DSLR, Red, s16mm, 35mm), aerial photography, underwater photography, stunts and extreme health and safety.

Credits

Inside Incredible Athletes (working title) - Renegade Pictures , United Kingdom
2010 - Producer/Director
An epic 90 minute film for C4 Specialist Factual to launch the channel's Paralympic campaign.

The programme fuses profiles of five sports and athletes, a scientific exploration of the skills involved, with extraordinary performance films which take the athletes away from the track and field to perform their sports in extraordinary locations.

Set to TX primetime on August 29th, 2010, the film looks set to be very special.

ALPELLA TV commercial - Dinamo Istanbul for Universal McCann , Turkey
2010 - Director
Stunt based, eye catching POV TV commercial for Alpella (Middle East and Asian mega brand, equivalent of Cadburys). Shot on RED Camera and HD POV camera.

YESTERDAY WE WERE IN AMERICA - Carbon , United Kingdom
2009 - Director
Writer and director of this complex period drama-documentary telling the amazing story of Brits Alcock and Brown - who, in 1919, became the first men to fly non-stop across the Atlantic ocean, some 8 years before Charles Lindbergh. Shot in HD on location in UK and Newfoundland. Produced by Carbon for feature film company Aquarius Films.

WAYNE ROONEY'S STREET STRIKER (3x60) - Plum , United Kingdom
2008 - Series Director
The format defining first series of the hit TV show for Sky One. One of Britain's finest footballers takes - quite literally - to the streets, to find a champion of street football. Urban and gritty, the style of this series was a refreshing antithesis to the usual run of celebrity talent shows. Multi camera, HD, and relatively fast turn around (16 weeks for 3 one-hour programmes).

I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M TELLING YOU THIS (1x60) - Carbon / Aquarius Films , United Kingdom
2008 - Director
A tender and personal film chronicling the lives of a group of men living with prostate cancer and exploring the phenomenon the internet has provided for this unique and confusing illness that affects two thirds of men by the age of 80.

THE SECRETS OF THE 12 DISCIPLES (1x120') - Carbon Media Limited , United Kingdom
2010 - Studio Director

LITTLE BRITAIN DOWN UNDER (1x60') - Little Britain Productions / BBC , Australia
2007 - Producer/Director
Originally commissioned as a 'video diary' for BBC3, this film became an epic hybrid of performance, documentary and occasional mocumentary and earned a place on BBC1 primetime. Starring Matt Lucas, David Walliams, Kath & Kim, Harold Bishop and the cast of neighbours.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE: INVASION OF ISLINGTON - BBC News and Current Affairs , United Kingdom
2007 - Location Director
Prepped and directed multi-camera stunt for BBC2 series featuring the population of a small village who took over Islington Green for a day (along with 32 morris dancers, 20 sheep and 2 cows).

THE BIG ART PROJECT - Carbon Media Limited , United Kingdom
2008 - Location Director
Filmed phase 1 (of 4 phases) of the award-winning gargantuan C4 arts commission. Five years in the making, the TV series resulted several major new public art works, including an award winning 80 foot sculpture in St Helens.

2006 - Director
Very successful TVC for North American cell phone giant Rogers.

HEROES - A FILM FOR LIVE 8 (1x3') - Carbon Media Limited , United Kingdom

This film - written with Richard Curtis - told the history of protest, and was made for the Live 8 event and global broadcast.

JUMP BRITAIN - Carbon Media Limited , United Kingdom
2005 - Director
Wrote and directed the C4 sequel to my 2003 film Jump London. An even bigger ratings and export hit than the first film.

THE REAL LITTLE BRITAIN - Carbon Media Limited , United Kingdom
2004 - Director
Consciously avoiding the 'I heart' style of 'Real' tribute programmes, this programme took a quirky Modern Times approach to exploring the lives of 9 real life Britons whose existence eerily echoed the characters from the BAFTA award winning comedy series. Commissioned for BBC3, repeat high ratings earned the film a primetime BBC2 re-run.

BODY TALK (2x60') - ITN Factual , United Kingdom
2004 - Producer/Director
Two-part series for prime time Channel 4 exploring body language with Professor Peter Collett in an entirely new way. Prog 1 - Power - looked at politicians (and had consequences!) and prog 2 - Sex - the body language of lust and love. Co-produced and directed with Mike Smith.

JUMP LONDON - Optomen , United Kingdom
2003 - Director
Writer and director of this massive C4 hit: record breaking UK shares and sold to 65 countries. The unknown sport of Parkour (or Free Running) was transplanted to the rooftops of London for an unforgettable journey.

"...Mike Christie's film brilliantly captured free running and bathed London in a bright new light.... the middle section of Jump London was a mesmerising bit of television. You could use adjectives like balletic, acrobatic or gymnastic to describe it, but none would quite do it justice." THE GUARDIAN

Finalist, RTS awards, Best Arts Programme

LIVES LESS ORDINARY (2x30') - Wark Clements , United Kingdom

1999 - Director
TVC for The Brits 1999 and MTV starring Jarvis Cocker and David Bowie (amongst others) to launch the Drop The Debt campaign, with Bono and Mohammed Ali. The slogan - which I coined - and campaign became hugely successful, and the resulting massive debt cancellation programme is directly credited with educating 28 million Africans, amongst many other incomprehensible changes. Skills

I have a reputation as a stylish and visual director. I'm adaptable and I like the variety of work offered by working in both the documentary and the commercial worlds. I've made observational, formatted and profile documentaries.

I've worked extensively with large units and have broad experience with multi-camera location shoots (SD, HD, Red, 35mm), aerial photography, underwater photography, stunts and health and safety in-extremis.

I'm as comfortable with a cast and crew of a hundred as I am in a small documentary team, and can also self-shoot for the right project.
