Katy's Biography

Highly experienced PD, both self-shooting on DV Cam (Z1 & DSR) and directing crews. I am particularly experienced in making observational documentaries on sensitive subjects such as relationships, disability and obesity. I am great with contributors: from negotiating access and gaining their trust, to helping them to relax and open up on camera.

I have my own camera kit: a Sony HVR-Z5e (which can record HDV or DV Cam to tape or solid state) and 2 x Sennheiser EW100 G2 radiomics.

Credits

Jamie's Ministry of Food - Fresh One Productions , United Kingdom
2008 - Producer/Director
1 x 60 mins for C4.
Can Jamie Oliver start a cooking revolution in Rotherham and discover a solution to the UK's emerging obesity crisis? I filmed the final programme in the series in which he tries to give his ailing project one final push before launching his campaign nationwide. I directed DSR crews, shot on Z1 followed by a 7 week edit.

The Shooting Party - Maverick Television , United Kingdom
2008 - Producer/Director (Self-shooting)
Documentary series about nine deaf and disabled directors making their first short film for Channel 4. It's a series packed with humour, passion and honesty as the filmmakers talk openly about their lives as well as sharing their experiences as a first-time director. I self-shot the films on the Z1 followed by a 6 week edit.

Dumped - Outline Productions , United Kingdom
2007 - Producer/Director
Channel 4, 2 x 60 mins
11 people sign up for a tough eco-challenge, little realising that they are about to spend 3 weeks living on a dump, struggling to survive on the rubbish we all throw away. I directed programmes 2 and 4 with a digi crew and edited programme 2.

No Place Like Home? - Fever Media , United Kingdom
2006 - Producer/Director
ITV1, 1 x 60 mins
Primetime documentary about homesick ex-pats who, after many years spent living the dream, are now facing the dilemma of whether they should give up on their idyllic life abroad and come back to the UK. We follow them as they return home on a fact-finding journey and discover how the UK has changed, both for the better and the worse. I was heavily involved in reworking the format post commission. I shot on the Z1 and directed a DSR crew followed by a 5 week edit.

The Virgin Diaries - Tiger Aspect , United Kingdom
2006 - Producer/Director (Self-shooting)
MTV, 3 x 30 mins
Winner Broadcast Awards 2007: Best Multichannel Programme.
Each film follows 3 months in the life of a teenager as s/he contemplates sex, sexuality and their own virginity. Each diary is self-authored as the young person shares their most intimate hopes and fears through a combination of video diary, actuality and voiceover. I shot the actuality on both DSR and ZI and edited the films over an 8 week period.

Kids On Porn - Maverick Television , United Kingdom
2003 - Development AP
Channel 4, 60 mins
I was brought in to see if it would be possible to make a programme in which children aged between 11-16 spoke openly about their attitudes towards and use of pornography and how this informs their own sexual development. I succeeded in speaking to a number of children from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds as well as persuading a Headteacher from a secondary school to let me talk to his pupils. The documentary was subsequently commissioned.

Top Toilets - Jool Productions , United Kingdom

I set up this company with a colleague. We originated ideas and wrote proposals across a wide spectrum of factual programmes. Our work resulted in meetings with several commissioners and ultimately success with the making of "Top Toilets". Each film told a very different story from the history of the Twyfords' factory, to a day in the life of Carol Ellis, Wales' No.1 toilet attendant.
