James's Biography
I am a television cameraman with over 10 years experience in the broadcast world. My father was a cameraman too, which provided me with an early insight into the industry and invaluable experiences of dealing with the daily challenges of news. At the age of 18 I began working as a sound recordist and gradually moved on to become a cameraman a few years later. At the age of 22 I had obtained a contract with ITV West News working as a cameraman both locally and nationally. My experience as a sound recordist has allowed me to produce quality sound when operating the camera and also allows me to understand the needs of other sound recordists when working alongside them on a job. My work with ITV has provided me with daily experiences of producing high quality items and many opportunities to work with Outside Broadcast productions. I am classed as a camera trainer at ITV and I am fully trained in operating UPOD satellite vehicles.
In my years as a camera operator I have filmed a huge range of events and in many different environments, including; in aircraft, front line policing, boats, hot air balloons, hostile environments, severe weather conditions and in foreign countries. Through this vast range I have developed a real skill of handling and directing people to achieve the best results from my filming. I am a confident individual who can effectively work alone and in a team. I work hard to get the shot I need, and pride myself on the high quality images I produce.
Two years ago I had the honour of winning a RTS award for a single hard news item covering the ban on hunting. This was a proud moment for my family and me and is one a hope to achieve again in the near future!
I have recently started using high definition systems after receiving training from the BBC for operating high definition cameras. My first high def job was for September films filming a pilot for a series called Polar Girl. I have worked on a varying amount of documentary's, corporate videos, sports coverage and studio work, I have also done many foreign jobs for various company's and have always enjoyed travelling whether I am staying in hotels or having to use more unglamorous means of shelter! I also have Apple Final Cut Pro training from SOHO Editors. I find that being able to edit a real benefit to my camera work as I have a great ability to edit in the camera. I edit on desktop systems and provide shoot edit facilities for news packages on a regular basis to news organisations. My other skill and passion is miniature cameras, I provide and install small camera systems to all types of vehicles, aircraft, boats, people, animals and I have even attached one to a human cannonball!
I have a motto that "I can film anything, anywhere" if I can't physically do it I can find a piece of kit that can.
I am fully trained and certified in health and safety, risk assessment and operating in hostile environments. I also have first aid training and crowd marshalling training. I am constantly trying to further my skills and am currently training to operate steadycam and polecam systems.
