Dedicated Producer Director with 15 years experience in making specialist factual programmes.
My latest film was for the Ch 4 series Brave New World with Stephen Hawking. My programme on Machines was episode 1 in this 5 part series. The Daily Telegraph commented on the "staggering" science and "great talking points" while The Guardian said it was "bigger, glossier and better" than Tomorrow's World.... praise indeed. But my favourite review was in The Times, "It even made me cry filmic tears"...
Brave New World had its challenges with five presenters at five different international locations reporting on the world's most advanced machine technology. There were high production, style and script values.
Brave New World is on my Production Base site - five clips in all - one per story/presenter.
Soon after finishing Brave New World I was Edit Producer for a fast turnaround for BBC 2 called Will It Snow. With viewing figures of 2.3 million the Channel were really pleased.
I'm just about to start a one off feature length film for The History Channel. It's an ambitious project with high CGI content. I'm due to finish in June 2012.
I've worked with new talent and experienced presenters, have a good knowledge of CGI and written scripts on range of subjects from the Big Bang to Photosynthesis as well as directing mulit-camera action shoots. In 2010 I received a BBC Academy Science Writers Award.
My filming experience is varied - from 17 cameras and a crew of 30 filming demolitions (The Detonators, The Discovery Channel) to filming weapons systems from the desert to the Arctic (Future Weapons, The Discovery Channel; Ultimate Weapons, The Military Channel) and a fresh perspective on Cosmology (How the Universe Works, The Discovery Channel 2010; The Cosmos: A Beginner's Guide, BBC2, 2007) and photosynthesis (BBC4,2011).
Apart from producing and directing science (especially space science, technology and military science) programmes I have also made historical, docu-drama, observational and investigative programmes. I also make films on sensitive subjects like gun crime and recently made a corporate for The Metropolitan police on child abuse.
Credits for Channel 4, BBC4, The Discovery Channel/ Discovery Science, BBC2, ITV, Five, The Military Channel, NDR Germany and The History Channel. Experience of Co-Productions.
Very experienced in Multi-camera/HD; CGI; foreign filming (including desert and Arctic conditions); use of special equipment (dolly, track, jibs, cranes, mini-cams and high speed cameras); directing modern and historical dramatic reconstructions; use of special effects; self shooting; working with composers and contributors from all walks of life.
Prior to directing for television I was a officer in the Royal Navy. After leaving the Navy I did my PhD - most of my research conducted in Washington D.C.
I work between Glasgow and London and have also P/D'ed films in Manchester, Leeds and Belfast - and would be very happy to work elsewhere.
I'm now looking to start my next film in June 2012.
