Ab'obaku - MNET/DvWorx , South Africa
2009 - Producer
The story is based on how a young man destined to die with the king saves a generation of people with a similar fate by daring to face danger head-on.

It's late in the nineteenth century, in the rusty Yoruba town of 'Ile Alagbo', some nine miles and a shallow stream away from 'Ile Ife'. As customary, when the king dies, he is to be buried with some of his servants and some of his belongings. The men are the ab'obakus and they are expected to carry the king's luggage on his journey to meet with his ancestors.

Now the king is gravely ill and the fate of these servants hang in the balance. Though most servants consider it an honor, it was never a matter of choice but an obligation. However, AREMU, one of the ab'obakus scheduled to accompany the king when he dies is in dilemma as the king slowly loses the battle to stay alive. He has been in a clandestine romance with one of the king's most beautiful daughters, ADENIKE. An abomination in almost every tribe, but what makes it worse is that she is carrying his baby. Soon, he has a chance to escape death row and Adenike urges him to run off to Ile Ife where her maternal mother resides. She has a plan to meet him in a fortnight to erase suspicion

Aremu leaves the town and while in the forest, he overhears the king's most probable successor, ADEBIYI, in a meeting with a herbalist and their plan is to poison the king. Aremu is torn between returning and risking death even before he has a chance to say a word, and escaping into bliss which was just a stream away

He bravely returns and though he is almost killed, he is able to save the king and his doomed generation of ab'obakus as the practice was made voluntary by the king who also asked that he marry any of his daughters. That was the easiest of the limited choices he ever had to make.
